Table of Nations - Beginnings of the line of Shem

Shem is known as the father of all of Eber. He had 5 sons, Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram.

Elam, the eldest son, fathered the race of Elamites. Asshur, fathered the Assyrians and listed as the first king of Assyria. Arphaxad, fathered the Chaldeans, who are now the Chaldean Catholics of Iraq.

Arphaxad 's grandson named Heber gave his name to the Hebrew race.

In the time of the great grandsons of Arphaxad, named Joktan and Peleg, the earth is divided.

Genesis 10: 30-31 "The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar in the eastern hill country. These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations."

It is the line of Shem who Abraham descends from, the one who God blesses and makes into a great nation blessing those who bless him and cursing those who curse him. Abraham obeyed God and left the land of Haran and went to Egypt. Abraham is credited with righteousness.

Table of Nations - Beginnings of the line of Ham

Ham is known as the father of Canaan. He is cursed to be the lowest of slaves to his brothers for instead of looking away from his father's nakedness he ran to tell his older brothers, Shem and Japeth, who turned their faces away and walked backwards covering up their father Noah.

Genesis 9:24 "When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, he said, "Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves wil he be to his brothers."

Africa is known by geographers in ancient times as the Land of Ham. The Egyptians called their land Kam.

Ham has 4 sons: Cush, Mizraim, Put and Canaan
Cush gave his name to Ethiopia which was called by the pharoah of Egypt, the land of Cush.
Mizraim fathered the people who settled in Egypt as the Hebrew name for this land is Mezraim.

The sons of Cush are: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca.
Seba fathered the nation of Sabaeans who lived on the west coast of Arabia.
Havilah settled the east coast of Africa. Sabta, the third son, was father to a people living on the east side of the Arabian peninsula. And the last son, Sabtecha, settled in North Yemen.
And Cush's grandson, Sheba, forefathered the land of South Yemen.

Table of Nations - Beginnings of the line of Japeth

Genesis 9:19 "These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the earth."

Where did the descendants of Noah's three sons settle? Let's take a look at some brief history here.

We know Japeth had 7 sons. His first son being Gomer who is believed to be the father of the Cimmerians who lived along the Caspian Sea and the Assyrians knew them as the Gimarraya.

Gomer has 3 sons: Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah.
Ashkenaz settles in Armenia and his nation is referred to as the Askuza by the Assyrians in a war which is also referred to in the book Jeremiah in the bible.
Jeremiah 51:27 "Lift up a banner in the land! Blow the trumpet among the nations! Prepare the nations for battle against her; summon against her these kingdoms: Ararat, Minni and Ashkenaz. Appoint a commander against her send up horses like a swarm of locusts."

The brother Riphath gave his name to the Riphaean Mountains, an ancient name recorded by Pliny, Josephus and some other ancient historians.

Lastly, the brother, Togarmah, gave his name to a region in Armenia which is recorded in Hittite documents. This was destroyed by the Assyrians in 695 BC and dispersed throughout the Assyrian empire.

The third son of Japeth, whose name is Madai, were known as the Madeans but known to us as what history calls the Medes who lived in and around Iran.

The fourth son of Japeth, whose name is, Javan, was the father of a people named the Iamanu (Yauna) so called by the Assyrians. Homer wrote of these people in his story the Iliad.
Javan's son Elisha was the father of the Aeolians and well know in the Greek Islands. Javan's son Kittim settled in Cyprus. And the son Dodan settled in Asia Minor.

The fifth son of Japeth, whose name is, Tubal, first appeared in the records of King Tiglath Pileser 1 of Assyria around 1100 BC and known as the Tabali.

The sixth son of Japeth, whose name is, Meschech, was the father of the nation who stayed close to the Tabali's, the nation founded by Tubal, his brother. These two nations migrated to the nowaday city of Russia, called Moscow.

Shem, Ham and Japeth - Part 2

Genesis 10:1 "This is the account of Shem, Ham, and Japeth, Noah's sons, who themselves had sons after the flood."

Noah's three sons had a big task before them. The earth was forever changed after the flood. It would be up to Shem, Ham and Japeth to rebuild the nations through their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and so on.

Just by knowing a little bit of history now you might be able to figure out which son of Noah's you are descended from...and if your lucky you even might be so mixed that your descended from more than one of Noah's sons.

Sons of Noah
Genesis 9:18-19 "The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japeth. (Ham was the father of Canaan). These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the earth."

Can you imagine it? The whole population of our world comes from Noah's three son's. Each son had a wife and together they had children, and those children had children, and so on and so on, until each nation was large and spread out over the earth again.
Each son gave birth to different race's of people. Some fair-skinned and some dark skin and some medium skin toned. Each person different and unique. Some with brown hair-brown eyed, some with red hair - green eyes, some with blond hair-blue eyes, some with black hair-brown eyes, and as each generation passed these types became mixed. It is very rare in today's world to find someone who is of just one race anymore.
We are all, especially in America, a mix of many different races. We are each beautiful and unique in God's eyes and those who love us. Do you know your family history? Of what type of people you come from or why you have the color of eyes and hair that you have? Do you wonder if your a descendant of one of Noah's son's-whether that is Shem, Ham or Japeth?
